HELEN HONER
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Art has always played a vital role in my life. I am fascinated with unusual plant and animal images as well as some abstract and architectural forms. Often I use only a small section of an image, which creates a more interesting composition while revealing abstract shapes. Our bright California light with its rich shadows inspires me to explore the effects of bold color and dramatic contrast.. Humor and playfulness are also important considerations in my approach to art. I paint mainly in watercolor but also occasionally in mixed media and oils. I enjoy watercolors for their unique effects: the clean, bright colors, jewel-like transparency, the unpredictable watery textures, glazing and textured paper. Sometimes I add colored pencil, crayon or acrylic paint to a watercolor which can give it added dimension and 'attitude.' Painting in oils is a totally different experience. The buttery and substantial texture of opaque oil paints, the brushwork, the canvas; the entire approach can be a refreshing change. I truly enjoy creating art. My goal as an artist is simply to show that beauty can be discovered in both familiar and unusual places, to express my delight in these images, and to share this pleasure with others.
